Before and during the Cold War, the US conducted over 1000 nuclear tests.

There are cca. 20,500. nuclear weapons in existence-the exact number is not known.

Today there are some 440 nuclear power plants operating around the world, dozens more are under construction. Any of those may cause an environmental catastrophy in case of a natural disaster (as seen in Japan) or a mechanical malfunction.

Commercial nuclear power plants in the U.S. alone produce cca. 3000 tons of high-level waste each year.
